“If the Sky were to fall” Book Launch
Professor Gary Lit (Ex-Michaelian Class 78) will launch his book in our school hall on the 12th January 2022 (Wednesday) at 10.00am. Sales from this book will be donated to our school Michaelian’s Covid-19 Fund.
Objectives of this book
✅Heritage
This book aims to promote the rich heritage of the country among our young students. Nowadays, our youngsters tend to be excessively influenced by Hollywood. They seem to know more about movies and their characters (eg. Batman, X-men, Ironman, Spiderman etc) than their own national history. Sadly, they have forgotten the real struggles and sacrifices made by their grandparents’ generation during the Japanese Occupation and Colonial Emergency period.
✅Developing a sense of Empathy, Compassion and Civic consciousness
This book promotes among our students a sense of empathy and compassion for the less fortunate people. It alerts students to the plight and sufferings of other people, especially for those caught up in wars and civil strife. It also helps students to develop a sense of civic consciousness and appreciation for the harmony and stability of their society.
✅Resilience
Our younger generation has been described as the “Strawberry generation”. They lack the resilience and tenacity to overcome challenges and adversity in life. Reading the book will help them to understand and appreciate better the trauma and turbulence as well as trials and tribulations facing our older generations. This will instil in them the inner strength and resilience to prepare them for the demands and challenges in their life journey ahead. It will also help to imbue them a mental and emotional resilience necessary for survival and success in life.
✅Relevance with History Syllabus
The contents of the book is directly relevant to the school’s history syllabus. It will help students to gain a better understanding and deeper appreciation of their history syllabus. Hopefully, this will help them to obtain better grades too.
✅International trends and development
Understand what factors and forces have shaped their nation and the world around them. It also helps to improve their general knowledge too.
✅Improving English and cultural appreciation
Reading the book will also help to improve their English. It also helps students to understand the various cultural practices and traditions mentioned therein.
✅Preparation for a Journey of Discovery and Learning in Life
The highly engaging and personal journey illustrated in the book will enhance students’ interest in reading and motivate as well as prepare them for a journey of discovery and learning in and for Life!
